Retrospective guest Bahman Ghobadi is a pioneering Kurdish filmmaker, who uses his films to raise awareness of the difficult predicament of his people and gleans mesmerizing stories from his rugged homeland. Ghobadi was born in the Kurdish part of Northern Iran 1969 near the Iraqi border.

Mardan, Oscar submitted by Iraq

Iraq submits Mardan as official Oscar entry Mardan, a film by Batin Ghobadi, has been nominated by the cultural committee of the culture ministry in Iraq for the Academy Awards foreign language film prize. The film, which premiered in Toronto in September, follows a police officer gripped by a traumatic childhood memory as he searches for a missing man in the rugged mountains of Iraqi Kurdistan.
